ZeniMax Online Studios, known for its flagship MMORPG Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), has announced a significant deceleration in its content release schedule following extensive layoffs mandated by Xbox. The studio, which had recently pivoted to a seasonal model to refresh its live service strategy, now faces challenges sustaining the pace of updates fans have come to expect.
The layoffs came soon after the studio canceled its sci-fi project, Project Blackbird, despite strong internal support. This cancellation and subsequent downsizing not only led to the resignation of ZeniMax Online Studios founder Matt Firor but also disrupted ambitious future plans for ESO, including new systems and features like naval battles.
Senior Encounter Designer Morgan Goin, one of the staff impacted by the cuts, described the situation as blindsiding, with the team facing a period of uncertainty before layoffs hit. Goin acknowledged that the scale of the reductions means ESO’s content updates will not only slow but will never again match the previous output levels.
Contrary to implications that poor performance caused these cuts, sources inside ZeniMax emphasized that Elder Scrolls Online was financially healthy, having surpassed $2 billion in lifetime revenue and showing positive trends in key performance metrics. Yet despite this success, the studio’s staff reductions appear to be driven by wider corporate restructuring rather than the game’s commercial status.
Adding complexity, insiders point out that ESO’s custom in-house engine and intricate development processes limit the effectiveness of hiring external contractors to fill gaps quickly. New developers require extensive onboarding time, making rapid content production unfeasible under current conditions.
While ZeniMax and Microsoft’s leadership, including CEO Asha Sharma, reportedly prioritize franchises like Elder Scrolls and Fallout, cutting back the team behind a profitable live service title raises questions about long-term plans for these properties. The upheaval leaves a dedicated fanbase concerned about the future pace and quality of Elder Scrolls Online’s evolving game world.
