The State Department is finalizing plans to release a limited number of specially designed passports featuring President Donald Trump's likeness on the inside cover, positioned above the Declaration of Independence with his signature printed in gold. The agency intends to distribute approximately 25,000 of these commemorative documents through the Washington Passport Agency, though customers will retain the option to request traditional passport designs instead.

Officials characterized the initiative as part of observances marking America's 250th anniversary. According to reporting, the Trump-bearing passport will become the default option at the Washington Passport Agency for those renewing documents in person, while online renewals and other locations will continue offering the existing design. The State Department told Newsweek the redesigned passports would feature "customized artwork and enhanced imagery" while maintaining current security standards.

The announcement sparked considerable social media criticism. Users on X accused the administration of narcissism and wasteful spending. One commenter wrote, "The f-cking vanity projects are never ending. We do not want our taxes spent on the BS." Another drew parallels to authoritarian governance: "Similar to dictators and authoritarian rulers, Trump began putting images of himself on buildings and official government documents."

When a critic responded to a White House promotional post with an AI-generated image mocking the passport redesign, the White House replied with an image of a Metro card featuring former President Barack Obama, apparently attempting to deflect the controversy by invoking a comparison. The critic then countered that a one-day transit pass and a ten-year passport document were not equivalent.

The passport redesign represents the latest in a series of institutional renamings and image placements under Trump's second term. The administration has renamed the Kennedy Center the Trump Kennedy Center, redesignated the Institute of Peace as the Donald J. Trump United States Institute of Peace, and launched a new battleship bearing his name. Trump imagery has also appeared on National Park passes alongside George Washington, and the administration has unveiled Trump RX, a pharmacy initiative, and Trump accounts for newborns, among other ventures.
