Fighting between the United States and Iran intensified after Washington reimposed sanctions on Iranian oil in retaliation for Tehran’s recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The sanctions triggered a swift military response from both sides, including missile and drone attacks targeting US forces stationed in Gulf countries.
Iran declared its memorandum of understanding with the United States effectively void, accusing Washington of breaching the agreement by canceling sanctions relief and escalating military actions. Tehran also cited ongoing Israeli operations in Lebanon and alleged violations in the Strait of Hormuz as reasons for its heightened posture, warning that it would strike any "source of aggression" against Iranian soil.
The confrontation quickly spread across the Gulf region. Iranian Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for missile and drone strikes against American military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait. Bahrain’s activation of air raid sirens and explosions near US bases underscored the severity, while Kuwait condemned the strikes as infringements on its sovereignty. The United Arab Emirates accused Iran of destabilizing regional peace efforts through these attacks.
Additionally, Iranian officials reported successfully downing a US MQ-9 drone over Hormozgan province, near Bushehr. An adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader asserted that Iran is fully prepared for further conflict, while statements from Iranian political leaders on social media conveyed a firm rejection of US pressure and threats of ongoing resistance.
In response, the US Central Command launched a large-scale retaliatory campaign targeting over 80 sites linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. This included strikes on air defense systems, command centers, radar installations, missile capabilities, and dozens of Revolutionary Guard vessels operating near the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM emphasized these actions were in direct response to Iran’s attacks on commercial shipping, reaffirming that American forces remain ready to counter further provocations.
