Edison Scientific, a newly formed company specializing in artificial intelligence for drug discovery, originated from the nonprofit FutureHouse after receiving substantial interest from leading pharmaceutical firms. The company secured $70 million in venture capital to advance its mission of accelerating scientific breakthroughs through autonomous AI agents.
FutureHouse was co-founded in 2023 by Sam Rodriques, former head of the Applied Biotechnology Lab at the Francis Crick Institute, and Andrew White, a chemical engineering professor from the University of Rochester. Their initial goal was to democratize scientific discovery by equipping researchers with AI systems capable of independent reasoning. However, unsolicited approaches from top pharmaceutical companies revealed a strong market demand for a commercial product.
Executives at major drugmakers recognized Edison Scientific’s AI agents as superior to basic systems built on platforms like OpenAI or Anthropic. One industry leader described the company’s technology as the “Ferrari of agents,” underscoring its advanced capabilities and potential to transform drug development processes. Responding to this momentum, FutureHouse spun off Edison Scientific in late 2025 to focus on commercial partnerships and broader application of its AI tools.
This transition highlights a growing trend of AI-driven biotech startups emerging from research-oriented nonprofits to meet pharmaceutical industry needs. Edison Scientific aims to leverage its AI agents to streamline drug discovery, reduce costs, and shorten timelines for bringing new therapies to market.
