Walmart announced it will lower prices on several key products to commemorate the United States’ 250th anniversary. This move follows a request from President Donald Trump, who views the reductions as a patriotic gesture benefiting millions of Americans. Among the notable cuts is an almost 15% price drop on a pound of ground beef, one of the most popular grocery items.
President Trump framed Walmart’s decision as part of his broader economic stance, contrasting it sharply with current conditions under President Joe Biden’s administration. He criticized Biden’s handling of inflation, calling it the worst in history, and highlighted falling prices in oil, gasoline, eggs, and prescription drugs during his tenure. Trump urged other retailers to follow Walmart’s lead in lowering prices, calling the company “one of the biggest, best, and smartest retailers in America.”
The price reductions come shortly after Trump publicly praised a Pennsylvania gas station for lowering fuel costs ahead of Independence Day, reinforcing his campaign against what he terms “price gouging.” He also criticized California’s gasoline taxes, warning that excessive fuel taxation is burdening consumers beyond reason.
Last week, Trump urged retailers to react quickly by reducing prices to aid American consumers during economic challenges. He emphasized that illegal gouging will not be tolerated and called on government officials to ease tax pressures that inflate retail and fuel costs.
