Fidji Simo, one of OpenAI’s top executives and a key figure in driving its product and business strategy, announced her departure from the company’s full-time leadership amid ongoing health challenges. Simo has battled a neuroimmune condition that worsened over time, forcing her to step down after an extended medical leave that surpassed initial expectations.
Her exit comes at a critical moment as OpenAI moves closer to its anticipated initial public offering, signaling a shift in the company’s leadership during a pivotal phase. Simo had been instrumental in expanding OpenAI’s product offerings, particularly by spearheading efforts in coding tools designed for business users. These moves came as OpenAI aimed to close the gap with competitors like Anthropic, which had taken the lead in that niche.
Since joining last August, Simo took on significant responsibilities traditionally held by CEO Sam Altman, overseeing divisions including product development and business operations. She was credited with introducing new features to ChatGPT, such as ad integrations and health advice capabilities, as well as refining OpenAI’s portfolio by cutting less profitable projects like the Sora video-generator app.
In an internal communication, Simo detailed how her duties will be redistributed among the company’s leadership team, with President Greg Brockman, CFO Sarah Friar, and Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon assuming key roles in managing product and business functions. Brockman will take on additional responsibilities as OpenAI adapts to this leadership transition.
Her decision echoed the company’s recent pattern of leadership changes, following departures from longtime Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap, Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch, and research lead Kevin Weil, each stepping away for personal or strategic reasons. Despite stepping back from daily operations, Simo will continue to advise OpenAI in a part-time capacity.
Before joining OpenAI, Simo served as CEO of Instacart and held an executive role at Facebook, experience that positioned her well to manage OpenAI’s consumer-facing business expansion. Her medical leave began earlier this year after she disclosed the worsening of her neuroimmune condition, receiving support from colleagues as she prioritized her health.
