The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has intensified its crackdown on deceptive subscription practices by filing a comprehensive complaint against Genesis Tech and related parties. The complaint highlights a recurring scheme where consumers are lured with low introductory offers or engaging quizzes, only to face hidden recurring charges and significant obstacles when trying to cancel.
According to the FTC, Genesis Tech operated various apps under names like MadMuscles, Wisey, PDF Guru, Lumi, and Nebula, all allegedly employing the same deceptive playbook. This included obscuring auto-renewal terms, disguising ongoing fees as one-time payments, and making cancellation processes deliberately difficult or non-functional. A federal court’s temporary restraining order has since halted these operations following the FTC’s intervention.
The FTC’s approach marks a shift from merely verifying the presence of subscription disclosures to evaluating the entire customer experience. This means scrutinizing everything from initial marketing to cancellation efforts, rather than relying on fine print alone. The commission stressed that promotional language such as “trial price” or “you will be charged only $5” can mislead consumers if the recurring fees and renewal terms are not equally prominent.
Examples cited in the complaint illustrate this pattern. PDF Guru reportedly advertised a small one-time fee to download documents, while burying subscription details in less visible text. Nebula promoted personalized readings at $5 but concealed a $45 monthly charge deep in the fine print. The FTC also flagged serious violations involving broken or unresponsive cancellation systems, which federal law prohibits. Customers were allegedly billed even after canceling or receiving confirmation.
Alongside deceptive billing, the complaint also focuses on aggressive upselling tactics using stored payment methods. These upsells were reportedly dressed up as confirmation steps or free add-ons, further complicating consumers’ understanding of charges.
